As well as selling instruments that I refurbish, I would like to offer my skills to anyone having an older clarinet (or saxophone) in good condition that needs a full overhaul. I am experienced on Boehm, Full Boehm, Simple, and Albert system clarinets in A, Bb, C, and Eb. I also repad soprano, alto, C Melody, tenor, and baritone saxophones. This will not be a discount service offering to slam a new set of pads into your clarinet for $85, this will be a meticulous job including:
Extra condition issues such as cracks, chips, rusted keys, or an unusual number of loose posts/missing or broken springs will generate extra charges. All of these things take time, skill, and specialized tools. I will do my best to see that the instrument plays as well as it can (given its age and condition) and looks clean and professional.
Please don't send me plastic student instruments, clarinets that were run over by a truck or whose keys are all rusted in place, or Chinese/Indian made 'Saturday Night Specials'. These last have poor casting and no part supply or tech support, leaving a body in a world of hurt if a key snaps!
Prices
For a trouble free overhaul of a Boehm system clarinet, I am currently starting at $250. This covers about 6 hours of my time plus materials. Albert system clarinets will start at $275 and Full Boehms at $300 (they take a couple extra hours, easy). Vintage clarinets must be priced on a case by case basis due to condition issues, quality of construction, age, and special-ordered supplies (special pads, for instance).
Saxophone pricing will be based on age, condition, and complexity of mechanism. Older saxes, like older clarinets, require a lot of extra time and some specialized tools to obtain the best results. Altos will generally start @ $350, tenors @ $400, baritones @ $450.
Please remember that I work alone and p/t (around my teaching and playing obligations) and may have a waiting list, as there are not many competent woodwind techs within a 100 miles! That being said, I generally have a pretty quick turnaround time, as I don't take on a lot of projects at the same time...
Shipping
I ship by USPS priority with delivery confirmation or UPS ground with tracking (depending on the weight of the item). I can generally ship a clarinet and case for $14-25, a sax for $28-45 depending on weight - I try not to pad shipping.
